Also known as “assisted hatching.” Naturally, blastocyst embryos break the layer of cells that surround them to hatch and allow implantation in the uterus. However, in certain circumstances embryos have difficulties in carrying out this hatching.
Assisted hatching is a process carried out in the laboratory. With the help of a special microneedle or a laser we make a cut in the outer membrane of the embryo (known as ‘zona pellucida’) to enable hatching of the blastocyst .
The technique is indicated in the following cases:
- Excessive thickness of the zona pellucida.
- Previously vitrified embryos, in which the zona pellucida has hardened.
- Previous implementation failures.
