Fertility preservation

WHAT DOES IT CONSIST OF?

This is a common thought to many young women. The desire for motherhood is not a priority in their lives. Before they want to complete their training, develop their career and launch various personal projects. A whole list of “Things to do before having a child”.

For this reason, more and more women are putting off motherhood beyond 35. And that is when they encounter different problems to achieve it. Pregnancy resists them, months go by and they don’t get results. Its reproductive capacity has initiated an irreversible deterioration process. In many cases it will be difficult for them to have a child with their own eggs.

Preserving your fertility gives you the freedom to choose when you want to be a mother, without the pressure of your biological clock. It allows you to fulfil your vital projects and decide when you want to go into motherhood.

It is a process in which a series of oocytes are frozen to preserve them over time. The oocytes undergo a treatment at low temperatures, called ‘vitrification’, which keeps their properties intact until they are thawed.

Before freezing, a cryoprotective treatment is applied. In this way we avoid the appearance of ice crystals and achieve that 97% of frozen oocytes survive the process.

Vitrified ovules keep their reproductive capacity intact. This means that, with an egg preserved at 35, you will have the same chance of getting pregnant as when you froze it.

WHO IS IT FOR?

  • Women who intend to delay their maternity beyond the age of 35, or who are forced to do so for work or economic reasons.
  • Patients who must undergo chemotherapy or radiotherapy. These treatments can cause damage to the ovarian follicles and reduce reproductive capacity.
  • Surgical interventions in the ovaries that may lead to reduced fertility.
  • Low ovarian reserve by genetics (detectable by ultrasound of the ovarian follicles at any age).

HOW WE DO IT?

The first step is to extract several ovules for preservation in liquid nitrogen tanks. For this, a controlled ovarian stimulation treatment is applied. A hormonal medication is given so that your ovary develops several mature eggs in the same menstrual cycle. The entire process usually takes about twelve days

Upon completing the treatment, we will perform an ovarian puncture in which we will remove all mature ovules. It is a very fast process, between 10 and 15 minutes, which is done with sedation so you do not feel discomfort. In the puncture the fluid is extracted from the ovarian follicles, where the ovules are contained. The usual thing is to extract between twelve and fifteen.

The eggs will be vitrified in nitrogen tanks so you can use them whenever you want.

FAQ

FREQUENT QUESTIONS
  • How long can a vitrified egg be preserved?

Liquid nitrogen causes the ovule to solidify instantly and keep all its properties intact. As long as the cold chain is not broken, this means that an egg can remain preserved indefinitely and be used years after vitrification.

  • How old can I freeze my eggs?

Since the level of fertility decreases with age, when before you freeze the greater the chances of becoming pregnant once you start the assisted reproduction treatment. What the specialists recommend is to do it before the age of 30 or, at most, at 35. From this age, the natural decline in the ovarian reserve begins, so that the ovules you vitrify will be of poor quality.

  • Does freezing eggs have any effect on the chances of getting pregnant?

Several studies confirm that the chances of achieving a pregnancy with a vitrified egg and a fresh one of the same age are practically the same. Following this logic, a frozen egg at 30 is much better than a fresh egg at 40.

  • Up to what age can I use a frozen egg?

The limit to use the ovules that you have frozen is the same as with ovodonation. It is considered that approximately up to 45 years the body of a woman can undergo a pregnancy process without entailing an extraordinary risk. For reasons of patient safety, in Spanish fertility clinics, assisted reproduction treatments are not performed on women over 50 years of age, even if the ovules used are of good quality.
